Dancers from Flamenco del Mar Spanish Dance Studio will perform with guest artists from the Vancouver flamenco community. Invited guests include Flamenco guitarist Juan Carreras, cantaora (singer) Jafelin Heltin and bailora (dancer) Denise Canso. This cultural event has become a tradition to the Coast Capital Playhouse and the sunny White Rock/South Surrey area. Born in Cape Town, South Africa (and growing up in Sarnia, Ontario), bailora (flamenco dancer) Jill Tunbridge began Spanish dancing at age seven, and Flamenco at 19. After years of exclusive study in flamenco dance (with Paula Moreno in Toronto, Oscar Nieto and Rosario Ancer in Vancouver, and many artists in Spain and the US), Jill opened her studio in White Rock. An instructor and choreographer to dancers of all ages, she is also the organizer of the FDM festival. Born in Barcelona, Spain, Juan Carreras “Juan de Marias” dedicated his life to the art of flamenco guitar. His journey into the heart of flamenco began at an early age by having the opportunity to study with such renowned artists as Niño de las Cuevas and Antonio Francisco in Barcelona, Andres Batista in Madrid and Emilio Maya in Granada. Juan has performed in Spain, England, Chile and Canada as a soloist and as an accompanist to numerous singers and dancers. Cantaora de Flamenco Jafelin Heltin was born in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela. Growing up surrounded by Spanish influences, she initially studied with renowned Venezuelan tenor Carlos Almenar Otero before coming to Canada in 1996. Arriving in a country rich with international flavours, she was exposed to her lifelong attraction to the intricate melodies and song forms found in the world of Flamenco. Attending classes and numerous workshops with various Spanish Flamenco singers in Spain and Vancouver, Ms. Heltin worked at her craft the only way one can when pursuing flamenco, i.e., enduring endless hours of continuous study through commitment and dedication. After the successful release of her first solo CD, Tantos Caminos, with Vancouver guitarist Gerardo Alcala, she is currently working on her second CD (which comprises songs devoted to Latin classics) with guitarist Ivan Dimitrov. Bailora (dancer) Denise Canso was born in Manila, Philippines and grew up in St. Catherines, Ontario. An athletic star who fell for flamenco while working on her graduate thesis in public health care and epidemiology at UBC, Denise is a force of nature. Flamenco isn’t “just a dance or a choreography – it’s a culture.” After years of study, Denise explored deeper into the realms of flamenco by living and pursuing flamenco dance in Andalusia, Spain for a year and a half. Upon her return to Canada, she was a participant at the Toronto Flamenco Festival Canadian Showcase in July and will grace the stage at the Flamenco del Mar Festival on September 3rd and 4th. Soloist dancers from FDM who will be performing include Langley’s Karla Woode and Helen Fehrenberg. This festival celebrates flamenco, the fiery passionate dance form that was exported from Southern Spain. It is a cultural event that is fun and exciting for the whole family – electric and dynamic this promises to be a memorable ending to a wonderful summer as everyone heads back to school (especially so for Ms. Fehrenberg who teaches Spanish at Enver Creek High School in Surrey). ___________________ For tickets and information call Jill at 604-542-2096 or email: flamencotickets@hotmail.com.
